Sleep bruxism is activity of the chewing muscles during sleep. It may be rhythmic or non-rhythmic and can involve grinding or clenching, but not every episode makes a clear sound.

It happens during sleep, not by conscious choice

Sleep bruxism is different from choosing to clench the jaw while awake. The 2025 international consensus describes it as masticatory muscle activity during sleep and separates it from awake bruxism. In otherwise healthy people, the activity is not automatically considered a sleep disorder.

That distinction does not mean it should always be ignored. What matters is whether the activity is associated with consequences such as tooth wear, damaged restorations, jaw discomfort, or disrupted sleep, and whether another health issue may be involved.

Possible clues in the night and morning

A partner may hear scraping, crunching, or tapping sounds. Someone sleeping alone may instead notice morning jaw tightness, tired chewing muscles, tooth sensitivity, headaches, or changes to the teeth. A dentist may identify wear or damage during an examination.

These clues are not specific to sleep bruxism. A sound can come from movement, fabric, snoring, a bed frame, or another person. Jaw pain and headaches can have many causes. A lack of sound also does not rule out clenching or quieter muscle activity.

How a dentist may approach the question

Assessment can combine a personal report, information from a sleep partner, a clinical examination, and, when needed, instrumental measurement. The consensus framework treats these as different sources of evidence rather than interchangeable tests.

A dentist can look for tooth and restoration changes, ask about pain or stiffness, and consider whether other factors need attention. Instrumental methods can measure muscle activity or combine it with sleep signals in specialist settings, but they are not required for every person.

What a phone recording can contribute

A phone can capture audible moments near the bed. Reviewing a short clip may help you describe a repeated sound to a dentist. It cannot detect silent clenching reliably, measure jaw-muscle force, or decide whether the activity is clinically important.
