Terms of Use

These terms explain the conditions for using the GrindMute app, website, and related services.

Effective: August 10, 2026
Version 1.0

1. Acceptance and eligibility

By downloading, accessing, or using GrindMute, you agree to these Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use GrindMute.

You must be at least 13 years old to use GrindMute. If the law where you live requires a higher age or permission from a parent or legal guardian, that requirement applies. If you use GrindMute on behalf of an organization, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organization to these terms.

2. What GrindMute provides

GrindMute is an informational awareness and monitoring tool. During a Night Session, it uses your device microphone to look for sounds that may resemble teeth grinding. It may save short clips locally for you to review and label.

Automated findings are possible or potential events. They are not established facts until you listen and make your own assessment, and even a user label is not a medical diagnosis.

GrindMute is in early product development. Features, detection methods, availability, limits, and presentation may change. Beta or closed-test functions may be incomplete, unavailable on some devices, changed, suspended, or removed.

3. Detection limits

Teeth-grinding-like sounds can resemble movement, fabric, coughing, snoring, speech, doors, furniture, or background noise. GrindMute may therefore:

  • identify a sound as a possible grinding event when it is not grinding;
  • miss an actual grinding sound;
  • save a clip that is unclear, incomplete, or affected by phone placement;
  • stop or perform differently because of battery, hardware, microphone, operating-system, storage, or background-execution limits.

We do not promise that GrindMute will find every event, that every candidate is grinding, or that results will be continuous, complete, or error-free.

4. Medical disclaimer

GrindMute is not a medical device, healthcare professional, diagnostic service, or treatment. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent bruxism or any other condition.

Do not use GrindMute results as the sole basis for a medical, dental, medication, or treatment decision. If you are concerned about teeth grinding, jaw pain, headaches, tooth wear, sleep, or other symptoms, consult a dentist or qualified healthcare professional. In an emergency, contact local emergency services.

5. Your responsibilities

You are responsible for:

  • using a compatible device and keeping it sufficiently charged, stable, and safely positioned;
  • granting only the permissions you choose and following device and operating-system instructions;
  • checking that the microphone is not obstructed and that the app remains able to run during a Night Session;
  • reviewing possible events rather than treating automated output as certain;
  • using the app lawfully and respecting the privacy of partners, roommates, guests, or anyone else whose voice or sounds could be captured;
  • protecting exported clips and data after you share or save them outside GrindMute.

Do not place or charge your phone in a way that creates a safety, overheating, cable, or fall hazard. Follow your device manufacturer’s instructions.

6. Acceptable use

You may use GrindMute only for lawful, personal purposes unless we give written permission for another use. You must not:

  • use the service to record, monitor, or surveil another person unlawfully or without required notice or consent;
  • interfere with security, access controls, operation, or infrastructure;
  • introduce malicious code, abuse service limits, or attempt unauthorized access;
  • reverse engineer, extract, copy, or redistribute protected parts of the app except where applicable law expressly permits it;
  • misrepresent GrindMute output as a clinical diagnosis or certified medical report.

7. Your content, audio, and privacy

You retain your rights in audio clips, labels, and other content you create or store through GrindMute. You give GrindMute only the rights reasonably necessary to operate features you intentionally use. Under the current local-first architecture, GrindMute does not receive your saved clips unless you deliberately send them, such as in a support request.

If you export or share content, you are responsible for choosing a secure and lawful destination and for having any permission required from people who may be represented in that content. Our handling of personal data is described in the Privacy Policy.

8. Purchases and subscriptions

Some builds or future versions may offer paid features through Apple App Store or Google Play. The store displays the price, billing period, taxes, trial terms, and renewal information before purchase. Purchases are processed by the applicable store, not directly by GrindMute.

Unless the store states otherwise, subscriptions renew automatically until canceled through your store account settings. Refunds, payment disputes, and cancellation timing are governed by the store’s terms and applicable law. Removing the app does not necessarily cancel a subscription.

9. Third-party services

GrindMute may rely on operating systems, app stores, Firebase Authentication, RevenueCat, email, and hosting providers. Their services may be governed by separate terms and may be unavailable or change independently of GrindMute. We are not responsible for third-party services beyond what applicable law requires.

10. GrindMute ownership

GrindMute, including its software, detection systems, branding, interface, text, graphics, and other materials, is owned by GrindMute or its licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws. These terms give you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to use the service in accordance with these terms. No other rights are granted.

Feedback is welcome. If you send product suggestions, you allow us to use them without restriction or payment, while we continue to protect personal data under the Privacy Policy.

11. Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, GrindMute is provided “as is” and “as available.” We disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, availability, and uninterrupted operation.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms excludes rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

12. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, GrindMute and its contributors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, sleep, profits, revenue, goodwill, or opportunity, arising from use of or inability to use the service.

Where liability cannot be excluded, it will be limited to the greater of the amount you paid for GrindMute in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim or the minimum amount required by applicable law. This limitation does not apply where prohibited, including for liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

13. Suspension and ending use

You may stop using GrindMute at any time and may delete locally stored nights and clips through Settings. You can remove the app through your device. Store subscriptions, if any, must be canceled separately.

We may suspend or end access to online components if reasonably necessary for security, legal compliance, service integrity, or a serious violation of these terms. Provisions that by their nature should survive will continue, including ownership, disclaimers, and liability limitations.

14. Changes to GrindMute or these terms

We may update the service and these terms as the product develops. The effective date and version identify the current terms. If a material change affects your rights, we will provide notice through the app, website, or another appropriate channel. Continued use after the updated terms take effect means you accept them, where permitted by law.

15. General

Applicable mandatory consumer and data-protection laws remain unaffected. If a provision is found unenforceable, it will be limited to the minimum extent necessary and the remaining provisions will continue. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not transfer these terms without our consent; we may transfer them as part of a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, subject to applicable law.
