Getting started
Before your first night
What is GrindMute?
GrindMute is a mobile awareness tool that listens during a Night Session for sounds that may resemble teeth grinding. In the morning, it gives you short clips to review instead of asking you to listen through an entire night.
How do I use it?
Open the app before bed, follow the setup checklist, choose any start delay, and start a Night Session. Leave your phone stable near the bed with the microphone uncovered. In the morning, stop the session and review any possible events.
Where should I place my phone?
Place it on a stable surface near the bed, close enough to hear the sleeping area but not under a pillow or blanket. Keep the microphone opening clear. A bedside table is usually a better choice than the mattress.
Should I connect my phone to power?
A Night Session can run for hours and uses the microphone and on-device processing, so connecting to power is recommended. Position the cable safely and follow your phone manufacturer’s charging guidance.
Why does GrindMute need microphone permission?
The microphone is required to listen for possible grinding sounds during a Night Session. Audio analysis happens on your device. Without microphone access, GrindMute cannot run a session.
Does GrindMute need an account or internet connection?
No named account is required for core use, and audio detection is designed to run on your device. Some supporting functions—such as anonymous technical authentication, store purchases, updates, or opening help pages—may require a connection.

Understanding what you hear
What is a “potential grinding” event?
It is a sound GrindMute considers worth checking. It is not a confirmed grinding event and it is not a diagnosis. Movement, fabric, coughing, snoring, speech, furniture, and environmental sounds can sometimes sound similar.
What is “confirmed grinding”?
It means you listened to a saved clip and marked it as Grinding. GrindMute keeps automatic candidate counts separate from user-confirmed counts. Your label still represents your own review, not a clinical conclusion.
How accurate is GrindMute?
Detection is not 100% accurate. GrindMute can save a non-grinding sound or miss a real grinding sound. Phone placement, room noise, microphone hardware, battery settings, and operating-system behavior can all affect results.
Why did GrindMute find no clips?
A quiet report can mean no relevant sounds were found, but it does not prove that grinding did not happen. Also check whether the session ran as expected, the microphone stayed uncovered, background execution remained available, and the phone was close enough.
Does GrindMute diagnose bruxism?
No. GrindMute supports awareness and monitoring only. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent bruxism or any other condition. If you have jaw pain, tooth damage, headaches, or another concern, speak with a dentist or qualified healthcare professional.
What do the reports mean?
Reports help you review possible and confirmed events, their timing, and changes across nights. They are not medical reports and should not be interpreted as a measure of disease severity.
Privacy and data
Your audio and your choices
Does GrindMute record my entire night?
GrindMute’s product goal is not to keep a conventional full-night recording. It listens and may save short clips around sounds considered potentially relevant so you can review them later.
Is my audio uploaded to GrindMute servers?
No. Audio is analyzed on your phone, and saved clips remain in local app storage. Audio is not sent to GrindMute servers or third-party analytics services.
Is my audio used to train a model?
Not automatically. GrindMute does not currently collect your clips or labels for centralized model training. Any future audio-contribution feature would require a clear, separate opt-in.
Can I delete my data?
Yes. Settings shows the space used by saved clips and includes a Delete all data action for nights, clips, and corrections. This action cannot be undone.
What happens if I share or export a clip?
Sharing or exporting is an action you choose. Once a file leaves GrindMute for email, messaging, cloud storage, or another destination, that service and your own storage choices control the exported copy.
Troubleshooting
Keeping a Night Session running
Why does the app ask to run in the background?
A Night Session lasts while the screen is off. Some devices restrict background work to save battery. Granting the requested background permission or removing battery restrictions helps the operating system keep the session active.
Why did my session stop early?
Low battery, power-saving rules, lost microphone permission, another app using audio, storage limits, an operating-system update, or the app being force-closed can interrupt a session. Check the Background section in Settings before the next night.
How can I get support?
Email hi@grindmute.com. Include your phone model, operating-system version, GrindMute version, and a short description of what happened. Do not send audio unless it is necessary and you intentionally choose to share it.
